Issues with Antivirus & Personal Firewalls

DesktopDoppler may occasionally trigger false alarms with certain antiviral programs and personal firewall programs. Don't worry, these aren't real, DTD is a safe program.

First and most importantly, we wish to assure you that DTD has been coded to the highest standards, using Microsoft's Visual Basic 6 and the powerful Microsoft Interdev system. Its been tested on hundreds of machine configurations with excellent results and we do not in any way have any portion of this program set to run spy-ware, banner-ware, ad-ware, or back door programs of any kind.

However in today's hacker prone internet environment, even simple innocuous programs such as ours can be flagged with problems by what we call "Paranoia-ware". In reality, an antiviral program is usually a good idea, but these personal firewalls don't really do much except screw up your system and slow down Internet access. Unless you are running a 24/7 internet connection, or running DTD from a web server, there's not much interest on the part of hackers for your personal machine.

False Malicious Script Errors in Norton Antivirus- First, there is nothing wrong with DesktopDoppler ! The most common problem is with Norton Antivirus, which sometimes flags even Microsoft approved software commands as potential "malicious scripts". DTD has been known to trigger a "malicious script" alert in Norton Antivirus (NAV) from time to time. The best solution is to simply set NAV to ignore this in the future, usually there is an option checkbox right on the NAV popup alert that allows you to set this. Simply set to "authorize this script".

See image below on how to do this:

Notice Norton flags "OpenTextFile" as a "malicous command" yeah, right...and Notepad is a virus too?

Personal Firewalls causing Run-time errors or Access Violations- We have noted that the Personal Firewall program "Zone Alarm PRO" from ZoneLabs prevents DTD from running at all, somehow seeing its request for registry information to validate the license and requests for images from the internet as being hacker attacks and stops DTD from running, causing an access violation.  Zone Alarm Standard Edition does not seem to have this problem. After examining ZoneAlarm Pro and the way it runs, we've come to the conclusion that its way of intercepting common Windows functions is almost a virus itself. We recommend either using the standard edition of ZoneAlarm or using our personal favorite, BlackIce Defender, which takes a more traditional and sensible approach to firewall protection and does not interfere with the operation of DTD (or many other programs for that matter).

Internet Appliance Firewalls, Proxy Servers, and other LAN/WAN based Firewalls- DTD doesn't have any problem with any of these unless your MIS has these set in someway that prevents pictures from being downloaded directly. We have successful reports of DTD running on a wide variety of hardware based firewall systems with no trouble. DTD uses only standard HTTP internet requests, so it looks just like a web browser as far as these devices are concerned.

There are also Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) and a series of examples to help you setup the DTD tools control panel features. For questions not covered here, you can send a message to our support staff.
